Last week, I decided to redesign my store SpyPen.net. This was after reading about how bad home page sliders were for site design and looking at my site on SpyPen.net, I decided it was time for a change. The theme I was using was very limited and was not converting well. The site has sold just under $2,000 of dollars of Spy Pens, but for the last year was out of stock on all pens.
I was going to buy a more expensive theme, but I went with a free option from WooThemes called MyStile. I am also using the Woocommerce plugin which is great. It is very easy to use, but also has all of the advanced features one could want. The old site was hard to navigate and I felt the homepage was too busy. The new design is very white and very simple, but it is much easier for customers to get to the products. It also has a one page checkout which is sweet. I would like to change the background to a gray color and test that soon.
The actual products come from a few different suppliers whom I have set up dropshipping relationships with. When I first built the site, I actually imported and shipped the products myself. Drop Shipping allows me much more flexibility and the ability to offer lower prices selling the same products I was before. If you want to try and find some sellers to drop ship take a look at Alibaba, and also try to contact some eBay and Amazon sellers.
My goal with this site is to be ranked in the top three on google for the search term Spy Pen and then starting raking for other related terms. On the sales side I would like to sell 15 spy pens a month.
The most important part is building my rankings. Right now I am raking 10th for the term “spy pen” and page two for a few other related terms. Currently the site receives around 25 visits a day. If I can move up into the top 5, I am confident I can more than double my traffic.
In order to do this, I am going to
- Start publishing more content on the site
- Send free spy pens to gadget blogs for guest posts or review. I am going to have my VA find 10 gadget blogs to reach out to.
- I signed up for a few spy sites online and will post some comments with links
- Start a Facebook and Twitter page and send out some coupon codes to my fans
- Post video reviews on Youtube, and take video and audio quality samples to put on the site.
As you can tell the site is not done. I still have an error at the bottom of the footer I need to figure out, and the homepage needs a little more content. In the past two days, I have received two phone calls from customers asking about our spy pens. Todays was from a county clerks office asking about placing a large order on the site. I am also going to look into a unique phone number and answering machine for the site. I also need to add a few more products to the site like a 2gb spy pen.
If you have a gadget or electronic blog that would like to review a spy pen let me know! What do you think of the new site design?
